Belief, interpretation and care
Within Christianity, Satan and demons have traditionally been understood as spiritual beings capable of influencing or troubling human lives. Biblical narratives describe people whose unusual behaviour or illness was interpreted through this religious framework, and they portray Jesus and his followers performing acts understood as exorcism or deliverance.
These accounts belong to a wider history of religious interpretation. In earlier periods, communities sometimes explained mental or physical illness primarily through spiritual causes. Contemporary readers may encounter several explanations at once: a theological account, a cultural account, and a medical or psychological account.
A note on safety
Distressing experiences, changes in behaviour, hearing voices, seizures and other symptoms can have medical or psychological causes. Seeking qualified medical or mental-health support should not be delayed because of a spiritual interpretation. Any religious care should be non-coercive, respectful and free from violence, restraint, deprivation or exploitation.

Comparing approaches
Believers may regard exorcism as prayerful spiritual care, while skeptics and many clinicians interpret reported experiences through psychology, neurology, social context or suggestion. These positions are not interchangeable, and responsible discussion should distinguish religious conviction from evidence about health and safety.
Religious Tolerance presents these perspectives for education rather than advocacy. It does not determine whether a particular spiritual claim is true, diagnose an individual, or recommend an exorcism.
